How to Prepare Your Drains and Gutters for Storm Season

The storm season starts at the end of September for Queensland when the temperature’s start to rise and while these natural phenomenon’s can be something spectacular to watch – they are powerful and downright dangerous if you haven’t prepared. These storms can catch anyone off guard whether it be from the gale force winds, torrential rain or even hail, so it is best to plan ahead and be on top of the game.

The next thing to take care of is anything that you may have lying around your garden or home. Whether it is a pile of clippings and garden waste or some hedge trimmings, all of these things can make your drains play up. The gale-force winds that generally come with Queensland storms can easily pick up these piles and spread the waste all over your yard. Once this happens the heavy rains will wash all of this down the drain which will cause a blockage in no time at all. We recommend that you don’t have anything lying around your garden that could turn into a blockage in order to be as prepared as possible.

One thing that is guaranteed in a Queensland storm is rain. The best way to prepare for this is to inspect your gutters and clear away any leaves. One of the most common questions we get is “can’t I just let the storm clean my gutters”? While this would be quite handy if it were true, unfortunately it is not the case. The storm will only make matters worse if you haven’t cleaned your gutters by pushing the leaves and debris down the drains which will just end up as a blockage somewhere in the pipes. The end result of this will be overflow pouring from our roof to areas below that just are not prepared for such an influx of water.

Now that your gutters are all ready, you will need to check your downpipes. Clean gutters are useless if they aren’t followed by clean downpipes, otherwise you will just have clean gutters for water to run down before overflowing when it hits clogged downpipes. Once your downpipes are clear, your drainage system will be in perfect running order and your home will be prevented from flooding. A blocked drain is a nuisance at any time but come storm season if you do not have flawless drainage even in your house you can run into some serious hurdles.
